Scotland has thousands of castles, and some come up for sale each year. Their prices can change how you think about housing in the U.S. A studio apartment that might cost around $900,000 starts to feel very different in this comparison. At the same time, centuries-old castles and large estates sit on the market, showing what that same amount of money can buy elsewhere.

In Northeast Seattle, the median home price reached $1.1 million in January 2026, according to Redfin. Across the Atlantic, Cramond Tower in Edinburgh is listed for about $1.07 million with Rettie. This restored 15th-century stone tower, with exposed stonework and views over the Firth of Forth, once served as a summer residence for the bishops of Dunkeld.

A budget of around $1.3 million in Boston’s South End typically covers a mid-to-upper-tier condo, based on December 2025 data from Zillow. In Scotland, that same range lines up with Methven Castle in Perthshire, valued near $1.32 million. Built in the late 17th century, it offers six bedrooms, a hidden escape tunnel, and a wine cellar, and was once part of Margaret Tudor’s 1503 marriage settlement to James IV.

A budget of around $1.5 million in San Francisco in 2026 usually gets you a modest two- to three-bedroom home. Stretch that slightly to about $1.64 million, and Fa’side Castle in East Lothian comes into view. Mary, Queen of Scots, once left this castle to ride toward the Battle of Carberry Hill and never returned. Today, it offers sweeping views of the Firth of Forth and a vaulted basement dating back even further.

Any intending landlord will need to spend on renovating the castle, which can run into millions, depending on the intended use.
