What a $1 Million Home Looks Like in Every State

December 24, 2024

If you had to move and had $1 million to burn, where would you go? In some parts of the country, $1 million can buy you a mansion. In other areas, you'll be looking at condos and surprisingly small apartments.

We considered where someone would be more likely to move to if they had to move to another state. That would be one of the state's biggest cities, which would have the most opportunities. We selected cities with a population of at least 200,000 and then checked out local inventory and chose a home that we believe best represented the area.

These $1 million homes in every major city of every state paint an interesting picture of wealth across the country. Where would you want to live?

For $1 million, you can get a very large home with enough outdoor space that the property is zoned for horses. The front doors are custom-made from Georgia (the state, not the country, we believe), and the house has high ceilings with a master suite that includes a fireplace.

New Hampshire

This 4,700 square-foot house is a new build, but it hasn't had any takers yet.

First-time homebuyers in Portland will be lucky to find an 800-square-foot house in a good location for $400,000. Those with more money to play with can find much better than that.

This bungalow is 4,800 square feet and is located in the Clinton area, a place that's full of good food and shops.

The 1904-built house has hardwood flooring, an updated kitchen, custom millwork, a marble fireplace and a very nice front porch.

It's not difficult to find a home worth $1 million or more in Dallas, but we like this one. Partly because it's selling for exactly $1 million, and partly because of its ultra-desirable location in the Oak Lawn neighborhood.

Plus, there's a pool. You just have to have a pool in Texas.

So $1 million will get you a nice place to live, but it won't get you the best. For $1 million, you could purchase this 1,600-square-foot, four-bedroom craftsman between North Beacon Hill and Judkins park.

It sits on a little hill, so you get a bit of a view.

realtor.com

In Wyoming, the typical home is valued at about $258,300. In the state's largest city, Cheyenne, homes list for a median price of $290,000.
