Britney Spears is once again in the public eye. Her lengthy conservatorship ended in controversy and a possible lawsuit against her father and main conservator, Jamie Spears.

Now that Britney is once again a free woman, she's been making headlines and recently married her boyfriend of several years, Sam Asghari.

Her Humble Beginnings

Pop icon Britney Spears was born into a middle-class family in McComb, Mississippi, in 1981. She grew up Kentwood, Louisiana, and was only 2 years old when she began competing in local talent shows. 

The young singer and dancer was a naturally gifted entertainer. She was only 8 when she auditioned for Disney’s "All New Mickey Mouse Club." Producers deemed her too young for the show, but they encouraged her talent. She began spending summers in New York, where she attended the city's Professional Performing Arts School and got an agent.

Two years later, her dream to be a Mickey Mouse Club cast member finally came true, and she joined the newest group of Mouseketeers, which included other future stars such as Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and Ryan Gosling. 

Early Superstardom

When "The All New Mickey Mouse Club," was canceled in 1995, Britney returned to Kentwood to regroup and figure out her next move. 

At 15, she made a demo and traveled back to New York, hoping to land a record deal. She met with execs from record labels, most of which rejected her because they felt bands and not solo artists were the future. 

Jive Records, however, saw something in her and signed her to a development deal. In 1998, she released her debut single, "Baby One More Time." 

"Baby" was a smash, mainly due to the controversy surrounding it. Britney was all of 17 when she played a provocative schoolgirl in the music video. The song's lyrics "Hit me baby one more time" were also thought to be sadomasochistic, which Britney denied.

She said the song "doesn't mean physically hit me. It means just give me a sign, basically. I think it's kind of funny that people would actually think that's what it meant."

These controversies made the song and her debut album a smash. "Baby One More Time" charted in over 22 countries and remains one of the best-selling singles of all time, selling over 10 million copies.

Destined for Greatness

After "Baby One More Time," Spears had a string of hits and was destined for superstardom. Her second album "Oops!…I Did It Again." sold 1.3 million copies in its first week alone.

In 2001, she signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Pepsi and released her third album, "Britney," which sold about four million copies.

Her subsequent albums sold less, but gave her a $60 million dollar net worth. 

Trouble in Paradise

By 2006, controversy surrounded the young singer. She was constantly hounded by the paparazzi and entered into a series of tumultuous relationships. She married childhood friend Jason Alexander in 2004, but they split after only 55 hours, and the marriage was annulled. 

She then entered into a marriage with one of her dancers, Kevin Federline. They were together only three years but had two sones.

After their divorce, Britney began to exhibit erratic behavior in public. She shaved her head and attacked a photographer with an umbrella. 

It was at this point she was placed in a court-ordered conservatorship. Her father, Jamie, was named as her conservator.

A Lengthy Conservatorship Eats Away at Britney's Money

Jamie Spears was granted temporary conservatorship of his daughter in February 2008, and it was made permanent just six months later.

Most of Britney's $60 million is in investments and real estate. In fact, she doesn't have much in cash — just $3 million — compared to her musical contemporaries.

Britney hasn't worked much in recent years. She hasn't released new music since 2016, and her last tour was in 2018. It is alleged that her father mismanaged her money during the conservatorship. Jamie Spears was said to be receiving a salary of $16,000 per month with an extra $2,000 a month for office space, and he also received a percentage from her tours and other moneymaking endeavors. 

Britney was also paying a whopping $20,000 in child support, plus an extra $15,000 a month to ex Kevin Federline for other expenses. In 2018, their arrangement changed when Federline asked for more money, but the exact figures of what he received are not known.

Fighting for Her Freedom

By 2020, Britney, who had no control over her finances or personal life, finally had enough and petitioned the court to end the conservatorship. She also alleged conservatorship abuse perpetrated by her family and others working for them.

At that time, fans started the #FreeBritney movement on social media, which gave her a groundswell of support. 

Britney said, "I just want my life back. It’s been 13 years and it’s enough. I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive. There are thousands of abusive conservatorships."

In 2021, the court finally released Britney from her conservatorship.

A New Chapter

Britney is enjoying her newfound freedom with her new husband, Sam Asghari, who she married on June 9, 2022. The Spears-Asghari wedding was attended by several celebrities, including Madonna, Drew Barrymore, Selena Gomez, Donatella Versace, and Paris Hilton. 

Britney has recently hinted at releasing new music, but she's also admitted that she's in no rush to get back to the stage or studio. 

She does, however, have a book in the works. She's signed a $15 million tell-all book deal for her memoir — "My Life Is Toxic" — with Simon & Schuster.

After turning 40 in 2021, Spears is happy again and ready for her next chapter.
